Our Story
The Journey Behind The Round Table
Every great idea begins with a challenge. The Round Table Writing Retreats was born from my own struggles as a PhD student navigating the demands of academic writing.
I’m Amina Abdat, and my journey began in Algeria, where I earned my BA and MA before receiving a scholarship to pursue a PhD in England. Meeting the rigorous academic standards of a PhD while writing in my third language was overwhelming. By my final year, I was stuck in writer’s block and feared I’d never finish.
Everything changed when I attended my first writing retreat. Surrounded by fellow scholars, immersed in focused sessions and shared motivation, I discovered the power of collective accountability and the sense of community. However, I saw a gap - most retreats were held in remote countryside locations, inaccessible to many students and professionals. Determined to change that, I created The Round Table - a space where academic writers, PhD students, and authors can focus, connect, and thrive in an inclusive, accessible retreat experience in London.

I’m Amina Abdat, the founder of The Round Table Writing Retreats. This business is more than just a service—it’s a reflection of my journey, my struggles, and my belief in the power of community-driven writing support.
Throughout my PhD, I learned that writing isn’t just about discipline—it’s about having the right space, the right energy, and the right people around you. Yet, so many writers, especially PhD students, find themselves isolated in their journey. I created The Round Table to change that—to offer a supportive, structured space where writers can focus, connect, and make real progress.
As a mother, an academic, and an entrepreneur, I understand the complexities of balancing personal and professional life, especially for women pursuing ambitious goals. That’s why my mission is simple: to create accessible writing retreats where writers—particularly PhD students and women—can thrive, no matter their circumstances.
